The BIG DAY....................

October 7th was the highlight of the year for Cathey, myself and our banker. It felt like we were planning this wedding for a VERY long time…………. Now, the wedding decorations are either sold or in storage. Cathey is making plans for a ‘craft room” in the new found bedroom. Now there are three of us.

I must say, reflecting back on the whole thing, it was a good deal of fun. What a joy to have family and friends gather to celebrate on Whitney and Travis’s wedding day. Our parents couldn't make it due to health considerations, but just about everyone else was there. Not sure where my brother was.
Hardest part of the day for me was getting Whitney down the isle., and answering the question: "Who gives this woman to be married to this man." I'm sure I waited at least an hour before stating: "Her mother and I do." I handed Travis "The Bat", and twenty minutes later she was a Franklin!!

Right before I escorted Whitney down the isle I gave her following advice I found in a 1950's Home Economics textbook. (Intended for High School girls, teaching them how to prepare for married life.)
  • Have dinner ready: Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal - on time. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him, and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed.
  • Prepare yourself: Take 15 minutes to rest so you will be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking. He has just been with a lot of work- weary people. Be a little gay and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift.
  • Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives, gathering up school books, toys, paper, etc. Then run a dust cloth over the tables. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift, too.
  • Prepare the children: Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces if they are small, comb their hair, and if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.
  • Minimize the noise: At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of washer, dryer, dishwasher or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet. Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him.
  • Some Don'ts: Don't greet him with problems or complaints. Don't complain if he's late for dinner. Count this as minor compared with what he might have gone through that day
  • Make him comfortable: Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest he lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soft, soothing and pleasant voice. Allow him to relax and unwind. Listen to him: You may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk.
Whit, how this working for you??

Whitney is a meeting planner for an events company here in Spokane. Travis is teaching 6th grade at Colbert Elementary School. They will honeymoon on St Thomas the week before Christmas.

Alex’s senior year marks the end of our involvement with the Mt. Spokane High School Wildcat Marching Band. We will be going with the band on their spring trip to DisneyLand.

Summer found us involved with Alex’s Legion baseball team and planning for the wedding. I had a blast being the announcer for the July 4th tournament games that were played at Whitworth University. We tried to go to as many games as possible along with my umpiring responsibilities. As you can see, sometimes those two things combined and we found ourselves at the same field. (I don’t recommend this!!) That’s Alex at bat with me behind the plate. Travis was umpiring on the bases. His team finished 4th in the State AA Legion Tournament (No, I didn’t umpire in this particular tournament).

We’re now looking at colleges and anticipating having an empty nest. Right now though, along with Alex’s usual group of friends that usually hang out here, there’s a girl who keeps coming around…..hummmm

Have a Very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year!
